Meanjin is Australia's most reputable literary journal, founded in 1940 in Brisbane by Clem Christesen. The journal moved to Melbourne in 1945, with Clem editing the journal until 1974. We were approached by the brilliant new editor Sophie Cunningham to redesign the journal, something that was as exciting as it was intimidating and humbling. After looking over the 68-year archive, we made a new journal that was aware of its history but was equally looking to the future. We moved the contents page to the back cover, for practical reasons, as well as initiating new grids and type styles for each section to acknowledge the range and depth of content. For this we exclusively used typefaces from Hoefler & Frere-Jones, which allowed a great variety whilst maintaining a particular and consistent typographic sensibility. The cover and divider pages are done each issue by illustrators from The Jacky Winter Group.
